Jacob Kjaer, sofa, original Niger leather, brass, stained mahogany, Denmark, 1930s

Exemplifying the quintessential essence of Danish design of the thirties, this rare sofa by Jacob Kjaer captures a harmonious blend of understated simplicity and refined elegance. The spacious seat is marked by clear lines and angular shapes. The meticulously contoured armrests embody smooth rounded corners, further enhancing the sofa's graceful silhouette. Constructed from stained mahogany, the base features a platform meticulously supported by ten rectangular-shaped legs, seamlessly integrated into the frame with masterful craftsmanship. A captivating touch is the presence of brass nails along the outer edges of the leather upholstery, accentuating the sofa's delicate lines. The corpus is luxuriously upholstered in the original cognac Niger leather, which bears a remarkable patina acquired over the years.

Jacob Kjaer (1896-1957) started working as a furniture designer in 1915. Between 1918 and 1920, he studied at the Institute of Arts and Crafts Museum in Berlin, then worked in Paris and returned to Copenhagen in 1926. Here, he opened his own workshop. His highly skilled craftsmanship and designs got honored with the Hand Work Medal in 1954.
