The tapered single-edged blade is of clipped point fighting knife type as associated with James Bowie. That form was popularized at this time and remained popular through the turn of the century and beyond in various evolutionary forms.  This example is made with a forged on the crossguard and broad flat tang pierced for securing to the haft. The single edge blade distinguishes it from all others of the period. Condition is typical for Mexican ironwork of the period with stable heavy oxidation.
